This is true, but there are a few reasons why I prefer JSON-LD over other methods:

1. It seems to be Google’s preferred structured data format, who will primarily be digesting the json-ld content.
2. It reduces the clutter you get in the DOM, making formatting your HTML and your JSON-LD simpler.
3. It separates out user related content from search engine content, as structured data is essentially meta.

Also, as structured data is used for Voice Search Optimisation (VSO), It can be useful to format your content according to your different audiences, in the same way that a “meta description” would be different to a “description” on page.
